"ON THE BRINK OF EXISTENCE: Paying Homage to the Great Stuffed Animal"
Description of the Show:
Ever ready to please but all too often neglected, the Great Stuffed Animal has become a forgotten relic of yesterday’s toy store; replaced by electronic gadgets, video games and television shows that steal away from children their ability to imagine the unimaginable and enter a world of make-believe without the assistance of technology.
Stories like The Velveteen Rabbit, and songs like Puff the Magic Dragon, remind us that there is a certain soulfulness in the things that we love whether they are inanimate toys, or mere figments of our own imagination.
This photography series seeks to capture Stuffed Animals in their moments of glory, however brief those moments might be. It focuses on the contrast between reality and make-believe by juxtaposing non-living plush toys with the real settings that surround them.
The dichotomy between the real and the unreal represents the precarious and tenuous state of uncertainty through which the Great Stuffed Animal has endured, straddling the brink of existence, and entirely vulnerable to live or die at the whims of the imaginations of those with the power to bring them to life and keep them alive.
Each Stuffed Animal in this collection has a unique background story. A few of these stories have been provided as context as part of this exhibit.
